At HMAR, our mission is to advance marine conservation through innovative acoustic surveys. We aim to protect marine life by providing high-quality data that informs environmental policies.

We are studying the seasonal behaviour of herring and cetaceans in the waters surrounding the Isle of Harris. We have developed our own set of hardware and software tools to support the collection and analysis of passive acoustic monitoring data.

Our hydrophones support real time detection and streaming of audio data. Species identification is either from a webcam or by boat triggerered from the live detection feed.

Founded in 2025, Hebridean Marine Acoustic Research has collected over 500 hours of recordings.
We broadcast a livestream daily at 12pm to 1pm from a webcam located at the head of Loch Cliuthar, this is also available through our Twitch and Youtube accounts. We post clips from hydrophones, occasional underwate footage and photos of other localwildlife onto our Facebook and Instagram accounts,
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
